Airport bus service restarts, summer is approaching at Budapest Airport

In line with the growing passenger traffic, the 100E bus service resumed operation. Passengers can thus reach the airport directly from downtown Budapest again. From Monday 14 June, the service operates on the route between Deák Ferenc square and Ferenc Liszt International Airport every day, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Summer approaching: 88 827 passengers in May

Already 88 827 passengers traveled through Budapest Airport in May, which is nearly four times the greatly reduced traffic registered in May 2020, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

With the level of vaccination against the coronavirus increasing and the gradual abolishment of travel restrictions, a moderate increase was observable in passenger numbers; passenger traffic grew by 37% in May, compared to April 2021.

The propensity to travel is clearly bringing passengers back to the airport, and, with infrastructure developments, quality improvements and capacity expansions, Budapest Airport is prepared to handle the increasing traffic, which is likely to grow rapidly over the course of the summer.

Concurrently with the abolishment of travel restrictions within the EU, Budapest Airport is continuously expanding its route network. The most popular cities and seaside destinations are now accessible directly from Budapest Airport. Holidaymakers can choose from 89 popular destinations. Amongst others, they can fly directly to 11 Greek cities and islands – which is a record, as there has never been a greater choice of Greek destinations, not even before the pandemic – along with Turkey, Cyprus and Croatia, which are also accessible again.

Cargo traffic at Budapest Airport increasing quickly

Cargo traffic at Budapest Airport keeps on breaking records. Following a record quarter at the end of 2020, the first three months of 2021 brought more peaks in the history of the airport, and the growth trend continued over the next months as well. Budapest Airport handled 71 566 tons of air cargo this year until the end of May, 32.8% more than in the same period last year and 30.2% more than in 2019, prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Budapest Airport is thus at the forefront in terms of the rate of cargo traffic growth in Europe: in May it was 46.4% compared to the same month of 2020.

Thanks to Hungary’s favorable location, the successful cargo policy of Budapest Airport and the entire cargo community, the role of Budapest Airport, as the cargo gateway to East-Central Europe, is continuously strengthening. The airport operator thus forecasts significant further growth for 2021. In preparation for this, the company has commenced preparations for the second phase of the BUD Cargo City, in cooperation with the airport cargo community.
